Hardly anyone to date has modified or challenged Booth's well-known formulation, which has become the canonized definition of the term: "I have called a narrator reliable when he speaks for or acts in accordance with the norms of the work (which is to say the implied author's norms), unreliable when he does not" (1961, 158-59). Booth first proposed the unreliable narrator as a concept, it has been considered to be among the basic and indispensable categories of textual analysis. * The present article is a completely revised and extended version of a paper read at a symposium on (.)ġEver since Wayne C. ![]() The final section gives a brief outline of the generic scope of unreliable narration, arguing that it is unjustifiable and counterproductive to limit the study of this phenomenon to narrative fiction A number of empirical frames of reference and literary models can be seen as standard modes of naturalization by means of which readers account for contradictions both within texts and between the world-model of texts and their empirical world-models. It is proposed that it would be more sensible to conceptualize the relevant phenomena in the context of frame theory as a projection by the reader who tries to resolve ambiguities and textual inconsistencies by attributing them to the narrator's "unreliability." In the context of frame theory, the reader's projection of "unreliable narrators" can be understood as an interpretive strategy or a cognitive process of the sort that has come to be known as "naturalization" (cf. The second part outlines a radical reconceptualization of unreliable narration. The first part of the article is devoted to giving an assessment and critique of the standard notions of the unreliable narrator, arguing that the postulation of essentialized and anthropomorphized entities designated "unreliable narrator" and "implied author" ignore the complexity of the phenomena involved and stands in the way of a systematic exploration of the cognitive processes which result in the projection of unreliable narrators in the first place. For all intents and purposes, we can say that our narrator is John Milton, the blind guy who lived in the 1600s, only he doesn't always like to talk about himself, so it's easy to forget. The paper argues that the concept "unreliable narrator" needs to be radically rethought because, as currently defined, it is terminologically imprecise and theoretically inadequate. Not to mention, he often inserts references to his own poem and its relationship to previous literature (especially in Book 1). He even refers to his blindness (beginning of Book 3) and English politics (beginning of Book 9). Several times throughout the poem, he interjects, wishing that things could have turned out differently. At many points in the poem it becomes clear that John Milton, the poet, is our omniscient third person narrator. ![]() He knows the whole story, and he knows how he wants to present it, so he sits back and feeds his readers information as he sees fit. In a sense, the narrator is like a puppeteer. For example, in Book 9, he tells us what Eve is doing, but then he shifts and tells us what Adam is doing. Because he is not a character in the story, our narrator can be in several places at once. Milton does this on numerous occasions, often telling us what Satan is thinking about, or what Adam is really feeling. This means that the narrator is not a character in the story (like Satan or Adam or Eve), but rather an external observer that can enter the thoughts of all of the characters in the story. The narrator of Paradise Lost is an omniscient third person. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Throughout the day we practice on reaching, grasping, rolling, sitting, standing, walking, climbing, throwing, catching, kicking, cooing, and talking whichever developmental stage your child happens to be in at the time.įor a younger child still taking three naps a day, a third nap can be incorporated into their late afternoon schedule.ħ:30-8:30 drop offs, welcome children, free play and/or structured-play, story time, toys, etc.ĩ:00-10:00 naptime (depending on age), flash cards, arts and crafts, story-time, stacking blocksġ0:00-10:30 music, song and dance, games.ġ2:00-12:30 free-play and/or structured play, interactive videoġ2:30-1:00 lunch time, clean-up/wash-up, brush teeth,ģ:00-4:00 free-play and/or structured play, books, flash cards, various learning toys, etc.Ĥ:00-4:30 afternoon snack, clean-up/wash upĤ:30-5:30 pickups, outside play (depending on season) puzzles, music and dance, story time, etc.ħ:30-5:30 cuddles, love, and affection, eat, poop, and sleep. While I really love an unrestored car that wears it's years well leaving something looking like crap to be part of the latest trend isn't the same thing. Patina as a trend is a purely cosmetic thing. The sun is not strong enough to burn away the clear coat, so the roofs, bonnet and quarters stay good, while the car rot from underneath: very, very unsexy. We get rust in the sills and wheel arches, subframes, fenders, the bottom of the doors and so on. The problem over here is the same as in the rust belt area: The cars don't rust or age in a romantic and elegant kind of way, at all. It's still running strong, it has been maintained, loved and cared for, but also used - respect! In a sort of "Function before form" kind of way.Īlso: Anyone with the cash can go and buy a restored car. but few can show up with their grandfathers car and say "I'm keeping it looking just the same as when he lived". Just as there is beauty in well-engineered mechanical components, there is a certain beauty in a machine that has aged naturally from use (not abuse) and the elements. A car with rotten wheel arches and holes in the floor is not cool, it is just rusty. A -50s or -60s car with the paint burned off by the sun and a light layer of surface rust here and there can look really cool - And yes, I'd clear coat it. I like the patina look, if it is done right. Now people use it for anything with a little dust and a few scratches on it. ![]() Then some clever person decided to use it to describe some well-worn object they saw. Patina used to apply to the oxidation of copper and brass. At some point it becomes a distorted reflection of itself and the trend collapses.Įven the use of the word "patina" is trendy. Slowly the masses see what's going on and copy as well, but usually they do so because it's trendy, not really because of an authentic appreciation. Sooner or later a few astute people with money notice what these people are doing and deliberately set out to pay hommage to it, in their way. (I'm sure there is a car culture version of this type of person) And rather than cover it up or "improve" it they celebrate it as it is. These people are the artists and weirdos and eccentrics of society. (Usually all of those and more) see the possibilities and beauty in things that the vast majority of people don't. There are always people who, because of a few things - individualism, creativity. You can equate this to things like gentrifying a neighborhood or certain other kinds of trendy behavior. You want Patina? Spray a contrasting lacquer over it, and then just wait. I didn't love the truck enough.Īnd if I keep it long enough - the patina will come back. When I painted my '77 Silverado with Tremclad (Alkyd Enamel) and a roller, I knew it was going to oxidize and fade and go chalky, and I wasn't worried because over time it would just look like an old truck (which it is), and I was NOT interested in fixing all the rust properly beforehand. It's it's just faded paint and dents and stuff, I can do patina. In order to blast out the affected areas, and properly seal them, I'd have to fake a significant amount of patina, which seems like more work than just doing the whole thing. If I don't deal with the existing rust proper, and prevent the original rust-access from doing its dastardly deed again, it's just going to continue to rust. ![]() Part of me wants to save the "patina" on my '61 Apache (Original Omaha Orange, with Forest Service green lacquer on top), but I can't stand rust, and I have to fix the holes, and I don't want to baby this truck and keep it out of the elements. Spend the money on keeping it running and driving well, clean up the interior, and just enjoy it. I disagree about the Jag, that's the one I'd enjoy driving with zero concern. I honestly feel that the low quality, looks good from 20 feet, quick flip builds for circus like, televised auctions has brought the level of most "restored" cars so low that car enthusiasts will pay a premium for something that hasn't had that treatment. It is the lowest eschelon of the functional original, non restored market, but if you want in that game and can't afford a stunner like the Aston this is where you end up. That is just riding on the coattails of that popularity. The appeal of an honest, well kept original car that simply needs repair work is huge. I think every high end collector has realized they have spent 90% of their time and money undoing the damage of bad restorations. If that rolled into the shop I would beg them not to restore it. In the world of restoration, I totally get it in the case of cars like that Aston pictured above. ![]() ![]() ![]() In addition to the table itself, there are also a few pieces of equipment needed when purchasing a new billiards table cloth: cue sticks (which come in various sizes), chalk for marking the cue tips, brushes for cleaning the felt surface, balls (typically either pool balls or snooker balls depending on which game you are playing), racks for storing them when not in use, and possibly a scorekeeper board or coin mechanism if you want to monetize your table for tournaments or leagues.
